*We spoke to Tim Robbins and Common about their characters’ journey in the hotly anticipated season of “Silo” on Apple TV+.
In our exclusive, the two stars shared unique insights into their complex roles within this dystopian drama. Robbins discussed the nuances of his character Bernard Holland’s leadership and the challenges of portraying a character whose moral compass is constantly tested in the dark, high-stakes world of the Silo. Common unpacked his role as Robert Sims’ as well as the journey and the layers of emotion and survival instinct he brings to a society on the brink.
As we reported previously, the global hit drama is based on Hugh Howey’s New York Times bestselling trilogy of dystopian novels. The 10-episode second season will premiere on Friday, November 15 on Apple TV+ with the first episode, followed by one new episode every Friday through January 17, 2025.
Per the news release, here’s the synopsis: “Silo is the story of the last ten thousand people on earth, their mile-deep home protecting them from the toxic and deadly world outside. However, no one knows when or why the silo was built and those who try to find out face fatal consequences. Ferguson stars as Juliette, an engineer who seeks answers about a loved one’s murder and tumbles onto a mystery that goes far deeper than she could have ever imagined, leading her to discover that if the lies don’t kill you, the truth will.”

Bernard is a key figure in the Silo’s leadership and last season we saw him operating with his layered intentions. So how does his approach to control and secrecy shift this season?
“Well, it’s a burden because he possesses a truth that only he knows and can’t share with anyone,” Robbins explained to EUR’s Ny MaGee. “It’s a very lonely position to be in. It makes for difficult decisions, to say the least. I’ve always been fascinated by what happens to people in power that have to make compromises in their own way of seeing things in their own morality and what it does to their souls,” he added.
“I think you see a trajectory in the course of this season where Bernard goes through a huge change. I don’t want to give away too much, but it’s earth-shattering what happens to him.”
We asked Common is Sims’ presence challenges Bernard’s authority or does he become more of a trusted ally this season.
“Bernard knows a lot more than Sims. He’s aware of a lot of things and information,” Common explained. “I feel that as Sims, I’m his best support. That’s why being his shadow has been a key for me. It’s been a motivation because I know what I’m capable of. So I think… with the dynamics of what we have going on and all the craziness that’s going on in the Silo because it’s intense. It starts from the beginning. As Tim said, it’s a pulse and it doesn’t stop,” he continued.
“He has his wife there who has a lot to say. Bernard doesn’t trust us. There’s certain things that we tend to think of as the better attributes of what being a human being is, you know, the capacity to love, the capacity to nurture that, unfortunately for Bernard, is not a possibility because of the structure and the way that he’s been trained.”
The second season of “Silo” also stars new addition Steve Zahn, alongside returning stars Harriet Walter, Chinaza Uche, Avi Nash, Alexandria Riley, Shane McRae, Remmie Milner, Clare Perkins, Billy Postlethwaite, Rick Gomez, Caitlin Zoz, Tanya Moodie and Iain Glen.
Created by Emmy-nominated screenwriter Graham Yost, who also serves as showrunner, and starring and executive produced by Rebecca Ferguson, “Silo” is produced for Apple TV+ by Apple Studios. The series is executive produced by Yost, Michael Dinner, Nina Jack, Joanna Thapa, Ferguson, Morten Tyldum, Howey, Fred Golan, Rémi Aubuchon, and AMC Studios.
