*Prime‘s latest offering, “Divorce In Black,” directed by the acclaimed Tyler Perry, explores love, heartbreak, and the journey to self-empowerment. Starring Megan Good and Cory Hardict, this film delves into the emotional turmoil and resilience of Ava, a young bank professional, as she navigates the complexities of a shattered marriage.
In “Divorce In Black,” Ava (Good) is blindsided when her husband Dallas (Hardict) walks out on their marriage, leaving her grappling with the pieces of her once-stable life. Determined to fight for her relationship, Ava embarks on a journey of self-discovery, unearthing hidden truths that steer her toward a new destiny.
For Good, “Divorce In Black” provided an extraordinary opportunity to reunite with the legendary Debbi Morgan, who plays Ava’s mother.
“Amazing. I love Debbi, and I can distinctly remember being 14 and being on set,” reflecting on their dynamic, shared Good. “And even though we didn’t have any scenes together, she was just ever-present and constantly pouring into us. So there’s that familiarity, that comfort ability, and that safety.”
Their on-screen chemistry was effortless, as she explained, “in the dynamic of us playing mother and daughter, it was exciting because half the work that you got to do just to get comfortable with someone, even if it’s just touching them, you know, or interacting with them a certain way, we didn’t have to do that we had this kind of incredible base just to start.”
Hardict’s portrayal of Dallas adds depth to the narrative, capturing the struggle of a man who loves but doesn’t know how to love correctly.
“I think he loved Ava, you know, very much he did. It was he didn’t really know how to,” he elaborated. “That was all, and I think when he was dealing with things in his childhood and not having the proper tools to release the trauma, it just bled over into the adult relationship of not knowing how to treat someone who showed up in his life who genuinely cared for him and loved him.”
His performance underscores a universal truth about relationships and personal growth. “You can’t save someone who doesn’t want to be saved. So that was Dallas, and that’s something that Dallas has to work out. And Ava realized that, and she had to, you know, do what was best for her happiness,” noted Hardict.
Good highlighted the internal conflict Ava faced, especially given her upbringing.
“I sometimes think when you grow up in a religious household, the things that you’re taught, sometimes you’re not taught to go investigate them with God and ask God, what do you say? I know what the word of God says and what my parents tell me. I know my community. I know what my church tells me; you tell me how to walk this out. You give me discernment about what is and what isn’t. You walk me through it and having that relationship over religion.”
She added, “I think Ava probably discovered it along the way but didn’t fully have the tools to figure out what to do. And so I think that ultimately, Dallas initially leaving her, I think, gave her the strength that she needed to say, I don’t need to go backward. I need to go forward.”
“Divorce In Black” is available to stream on Prime July 11.
