*Wayne Brady’s new reality series, “Wayne Brady: The Family Remix,” will take fans inside his blended family.
During Disney’s Television Critics Association event in Pasadena, Calif., on Wednesday, July 10, the “Let’s Make a Deal” host said viewers will see a different side of him as he was in the “throes of depression” during filming.
“I’m glad that we also caught that on tape,” Brady said, PEOPLE reports. “And I was so in the throes of this, oh, this darkness, this whole thing, that the only way that I felt that I could show up was I needed to be needed. I’ve got to work.”
He added, “I can walk on stage and be charming and affable and make you laugh and look in the camera and do my thing,” Brady explained. “But the fact that that guy, and I even say it in the show, ‘I could make millions of people happy, but I would go home, and I feel like a piece of s—, and I couldn’t do that anymore.’ “
“Wayne Brady: The Family Remix” features Brady’s daughter Maile, his ex-wife and business partner Mandie Taketa, and Taketa’s life partner Jason Michael Fordham.
During Disney’s TCA panel, Brady reflected on allowing cameras behind into his home life to capture his true self.
“You could show the world who whoever you want on Instagram or Tiktok…the reality show, it was my weird way of holding myself accountable and making me do [be honest],” he said, Deadline reports. “So when I came out, or when we share various things that you will see in the series, I can always just hold my phone on TikTok and be like anybody else. ‘Hey, y’all. Great day. I’m chilling in Malibu.’ And you turn off the camera and start crying. Versus, when the cameras were on, they were really catching what was happening and we couldn’t stop it.”
Per the news release, here’s the series description:
Everyone knows Wayne Brady — actor, comedian, host, singer and preeminent multihyphenate of this generation — but there’s more to the man seen onstage. What happens when such an iconic entertainer peels back the curtain on the realities of an unexpected life? In “Wayne Brady: The Family Remix,” Brady has turned the term “modern family” on its head.
He’s still best friends with his ex-wife, soulmate and business partner, Mandie Taketa. Together, they co-parent their 21-year-old daughter, student and aspiring artist Maile Brady, as well as run their production company, A Wayne & Mandie Creative (“Wayne Brady’s Comedy IQ”). Jason Michael Fordham, Mandie’s life partner since 2009, handles the family’s cinematography and post-production, and Mandie and Jason have an almost 3-year-old son, Sundance-Isamu.
With Brady at a sudden crossroads in his life, “Wayne Brady: The Family Remix” offers an intimate look into his blended family’s personal life, revealing unexpected points of view and values that most people (including his own family) have a hard time understanding. People see their social media posts — from vacations to dancing in TikToks — but what’s behind the joyful 15 seconds of fun? Their real life is not always as easy and as simple as it seems.
“Wayne Brady: The Family Remix” is set to premiere on Wednesday, July 24, at 10:00 p.m. EDT, and the next day on Hulu. Watch the trailer below.
