*After running his mouth and saying some very despicable things, boxer Ryan Garcia has found himself in the center of a storm following racist remarks made about George Floyd as well as the Black and Muslim communities.
On Friday, Garcia announced he is “headed to rehab” and expressed a commitment to “abolish” the N-word from his vocabulary.
“I sincerely apologize if I hurt and offended anyone,” Garcia said, speaking after spending the Fourth of July holiday with the Sanders family in Miami.
Deion Sanders Jr., a close friend, defended Garcia but did not excuse his actions. “I’m not going to let a moment ruin a lifetime,” Sanders stated through his YouTube channel, Well Off Media. He emphasized that while they won’t abandon Garcia amidst the turmoil, actions are already planned to address his issues. Sanders mentioned that Coach Prime would talk to Garcia in Miami over the weekend to ensure he receives the necessary help, according to Buff’s Beat via Sports Illustrated.
Garcia’s controversies have been mounting since his no-contest result against Devin Haney after testing positive for ostarine. His downward spiral continued with an arrest last month for alleged damage to a hotel in Beverly Hills. Following his arrest, Garcia was transferred to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for a medical evaluation and treatment.
The backlash heightened with the latest offensive remarks, prompting WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman to expel Garcia from any activities within the organization. “@WBCBoxing rejects any form of discrimination. I fear for Ryan’s wellbeing,” Sulaiman posted on X, revealing that Garcia had declined multiple offers for mental health and substance abuse support.
It remains unclear if the University of Colorado knew about Garcia’s alleged substance abuse history when he appeared as a special guest at Colorado’s Spring Game in April. The Sanders family, who spent Independence Day in Miami, plans to return to Boulder next week to resume their schedule before heading to Las Vegas for the Big 12 Media Days on July 9.
However, not everyone is as forgiving as Deion Sanders Jr. Former NBA player Stephen Jackson took to social media, calling for a lifetime ban on Garcia following his racist comments. “Talking about you hate n***** and want to join the KKK – you need to get some help, bro,” Jackson said in a video clip. He criticized Garcia for seeking attention in the wrong way, stating, “You’re a clout-chaser, that’s all you are. You’re looking for attention. You’re trying to live a life that you didn’t grow up in. You’re not that, Ryan. You’re a boxer. Stick to that, bro. Keep George Floyd’s name out of your mouth.”
Garcia’s remarks on the app Clubhouse drew significant ire, particularly from Jackson, who reminded the boxer of the impact and sensitivity surrounding George Floyd’s tragic death at the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis in 2020.
As the situation unfolds, it is evident that Ryan Garcia’s actions have deeply affected many, casting a shadow over his professional career and personal relationships. The road to redemption for Garcia will likely be long and challenging, hinging on the sincerity of his apologies and his commitment to change.
