*Otis Redding will be honored posthumously with the 2,791st star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame during a ceremony on Friday, October 4, 2024, at 11:30 AM PT, located at 6150 Hollywood Boulevard.
The event, which recognizes Redding in the Live Theatre/Live Performance category, will be emceed by music producer Jimmy Jam, with rapper Killer Mike as a guest speaker. Karla Redding Andrews will accept the award on behalf of her father.
Redding, a renowned singer-songwriter from Georgia, achieved fame with hits like “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” and “Respect” before his life was tragically cut short in a plane crash in 1967. His legacy continues through the Otis Redding Foundation, which promotes music education for youth.
Two years ago, the Otis Redding Foundation unveiled plans to honor the legendary singer by building a performing arts center.
We reported at the time that Otis Redding Center for the Arts and Amphitheater aims to foster innovation with a focus on empowering the youth through music. Redding transformed the world of music through his, so this is only a continuation of what he started.
Founded 15 years ago by his wife, Zelma, the Otis Redding Foundation was established to carry on her husband’s philanthropic legacy. She now emphasizes that the art center will play a crucial role in her mission to empower the youth.
“Educating children through music was a dream of my husband’s,” Zelm said in a statement. “He would have been proud of the Foundation’s programs that emphasize creativity and inspiration.”
Zelma contributed $1 million to the project, with additional support from the Knight Foundation and the Griffith Foundation.
“I truly believe that making sure all children have equal access to share and build their musical and artistic strengths will help them become well-rounded students, thus making the future of our community brighter,” stated Benjy Griffith, founder of the Griffith Foundation. “The Otis Redding Center for the Arts will most definitely assist with that crucial access to arts education.”
