*Malia Obama attended the 50th Annual Deauville American Film Festival in Deauville, France to promote her short film project, “The Heart,” and her plaid Vivienne Westwood ensemble – as well as her strange accent – sparked debate on social media.
The 26-year-old wore a two-piece, floor-length plaid corset outfit covered in a mismatching red, white, black, and blue checkered pattern.
“I don’t know as much about fashion, but I’m happy to be wearing it,” Malia told reporters on the red carpet. This rare interview moment left social media users questioning her “alluring” accent, with one X person writing, “Did she go to the same accent school as Kamala Harris.”
Several users are convinced Malia was “stoned” on the red carpet, as one person wrote, “She sounds drunk and high …. wearing that picnic table pattern.”
We reported earlier that Malia’s short film “The Heart” is a comedy-drama that “follows a lonely man named Josh, portrayed by Tunde Adebimpe, as he grapples with the sudden loss of his mother, Anita, played by LaTonya Borsay. The plot takes an unexpected turn with Anita’s peculiar request in her will for her son to preserve her heart organ and care for it after her passing,” per blexmedia.com.

During a Q&A session at Sundance earlier this year, Malia described the project as an “allegorical little poem story.”
“The film is about lost objects and lonely people and forgiveness and regret. But I also think it works hard to uncover where tenderness and closeness can exist in these things,” she said in a Meet the Artist video during Sundance.
Donald Glover’s production company produced “The Heart.” In a 2023 interview with GQ, he said he told the daughter of Barack and Michelle Obama, “She will only get to do this once,” adding, “You’re Obama’s daughter. So if you make a bad film, it will follow you around.”
