*Cuba Gooding Jr. appears to be making his big screen comeback with a new faith-based film after a series of legal scandals halted his movie career.
The veteran actor leads the cast of “The Firing Squad,” a drama about prisoners finding Christ in an Indonesian prison, co-starring Kevin Sorbo and newcomer James Barrington.
Page Six reports that Gooding hosted a private screening at Grey/Ven CEO Scott Weissman’s East Hampton estate, where attendees were moved to tears. During the event, he performed “Amazing Grace” in front of the screen.
“People were crying,” one attendee told Page Six.
At one point, Gooding told Weissman, “I thought you were going to have fried chicken and hot dogs, but you got like real rich-people food.”
The project comes after Gooding faced sexual assault accusations and pleaded guilty to forcibly touching a woman.
According to Page Six, he credits his faith with helping him through difficult times, though some critics argue that he may be using it to rehabilitate his image.
“It’s that old saying: you can’t please people every time. But people who want to celebrate artistry, that’s my job and that’s my only mission in life,” Gooding recently told Extra.
“It’s one of those things where I know that I’m here for a reason, and I know that and as long as I do what I do and I’m good at what I do and I’m passionate about what I do, God’s will will be done,” he said.
