*Beyoncé was overlooked at the Country Music Awards, with her album “Cowboy Carter” failing to secure any nominations at the prestigious event.
This year, Morgan Wallen leads with seven nominations, including entertainer of the year, where he’s up against Luke Combs, Jelly Roll, Chris Stapleton, and Lainey Wilson.
“Cowboy Carter” made history as the first album by a Black woman to reach No. 1 on Billboard’s top country albums chart. The single “Texas Hold ’Em” became the first by a Black woman to top both Billboard’s country song chart and the Hot 100 chart.
“It was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed…and it was very clear that I wasn’t,” Beyonce said of the album while announcing it in March. “But, because of that experience, I did a deeper dive into the history of Country music and studied our rich musical archive.”
She also told fans: “I hope this music is an experience, creating another journey where you can close your eyes, start from the beginning, and never stop. This ain’t a Country album. This is a ‘Beyoncé’ album.”
The Guardian reports that the CMA nominees and winners are determined each year by the 7,300 members of the Country Music Association through three rounds of voting. Bey’s father, Mathew Knowles, reacted to the news his daughter was snubbed. He told TMZ that the CMA Awards voters are “showing it still comes down to white and Black.”
“There’s more white people in America and unfortunately they don’t vote based on ability and achievements,” Knowles added. “It’s still sometimes a white and Black thing.”
He said, “In America, there’s no accountability for people not being accepting of other cultures.”
The CMA winners will be revealed during a live broadcast on ABC on November 20.
